Adopted in the UK

Hi there, yesterday I found out that my parents adopted me as an embryo and I am therefore not genetically related to any of my family.

I was wondering if anyone else was in the same situation? I've not found much information on this happening in the UK. I'm 18 and born in 1991 which makes it even more strange in my eyes? I can't imagine that this happened much in those days? It seems even now to be a very touchy subject?

Apparently a couple can only donate if they have carried two pregnancies to term, therefore I would presume that I have two older siblings. Apparently I was also a twin but the other embryo didn't survive.

Does anyone know under what circumstances a couple donate embryos, is it only spare embryos after they have tried IVF?

I'm thinking of finding out about my natural parents if not to see what they're like just to find out about my medical history etc.

Also, my mother believed that I had previously thought that I was adopted but honestly, I had NO idea! Therefore they did not break the news to me very well and to be honest I am really quite shocked and confused. Has anyone else had the same experience? I honestly thought that I fitted into this family, I even look like the siblings in this family. It took me a while to believe that my parents were actually telling me the truth.

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated! Thank you!

I haven't had that experience, but I wish you luck in finding the answers you need.

ETA: I posted a link to your post on Y!Answers adoption section. I suspect one's already been over here to answer, but you may find other helpful answers over there.

Thank you so much, I hadn't even thought of posting there!

I will soon be going to the hospital where the donation happened and they will tell me my medical history and any details of the parents if they left them. Despite what some people have said on yahoo, it is apparently common for the genetic parents to want to know of any children that may have been concieved and apparently my mother send a photo of me as a child to the parents through the hospital so, anyway, we shall see what happens. Thanks again.
